Beyond the Gates - Project in Progress
"Beyond the Gates" is a project aimed at revealing what is behind the many gated communities within the Palm Springs area. Palm Springs remains one of the largest users of water despite being in one of the worst droughts throughout it's history. The large, secure gates often hide the unnatural looking green fields and flora, artificial lakes, and massive homes that have replaced the desert landscape that existed before development.
On July 8th, 2021 the Governor of California declared a state drought of emergency. However in Palm Springs, few restrictions relating to the conservation of water are still in place. Palm Springs has over 130 golf courses, often equipped with multiple man-made lakes, and approximately 40,000 pools in the area.
The project will feature both satellite images from above the gated communities as well as images of what can be seen from outside of the gates. The stark contrast of the photos with what you would imagine a drought-ridden environment to be will reveal the misuse of water in the desert.
